Overview
The oral part (Sprechen) takes about 15 minutes and gives 15 points, half of all points in the test. You need at least 7.5 points here to pass. It is an individual interview: you talk with the examiner, there is no partner candidate.
| Part | Time | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Getting to know each other (Kennenlernen) | about 3 min | Talk about yourself |
| 2. Photo | about 6 min | Choose one of three photos, describe it, answer questions |
| 3. Discussing a situation | about 6 min | Talk about advantages and disadvantages and give your decision |
There is no separate listening test, but understanding the examiner is part of this section. Below you find what to do if you do not understand something.
Part 1: Getting to know each other
The examiner asks about you: your name, where you come from, how long you have lived in Berlin, your family, work, hobbies, why you learn German. Prepare a short introduction, but do not recite it like a poem. Answer the questions you are asked.
Ich heiße Ahmet Demir und komme aus der Türkei, aus Izmir.
Ich wohne seit acht Jahren in Berlin, in Neukölln.
Ich bin verheiratet und habe zwei Kinder. Mein Sohn geht in die zweite Klasse.
Ich arbeite als Busfahrer bei einer Firma in Berlin.
In meiner Freizeit spiele ich gern Fußball und koche mit meiner Familie.
Short, clear sentences. Each one gives a new piece of information. Add one detail (seit acht Jahren, in Neukölln) to show more language.
Part 2: The photo
You see three photos and choose one. Choose the photo with the topic you know the most words for. Describe what you see, then the examiner asks follow-up questions, often about your own experience.
- 1
Say what the photo shows
Auf dem Foto sehe ich ... / Das Foto zeigt ...
- 2
Describe people, place and action
Wer ist auf dem Bild? Wo sind sie? Was machen sie?
- 3
Guess and interpret
Ich glaube, ... / Vielleicht ... / Es sieht so aus, als ob ...
- 4
Connect to your life
Bei mir ist das ähnlich: ... / In meinem Heimatland ...
Auf dem Foto sehe ich eine Familie auf einem Markt.
Links steht eine Frau mit einem Korb. Sie kauft Obst und Gemüse.
Rechts ist ein Mann mit einem kleinen Kind. Das Kind lacht.
Ich glaube, es ist Samstag, weil viele Leute da sind und das Wetter schön ist.
Ich gehe auch gern auf den Markt, weil das Gemüse frisch ist. Bei uns in Berlin gibt es einen Markt am Maybachufer.
Part 3: Discussing a situation
The examiner describes a situation with a choice, for example: should a family move to a bigger flat outside the city, or stay in a small flat in the centre? You talk about advantages (Vorteile) and disadvantages (Nachteile), and at the end you say what you would decide and why.
Ein Vorteil ist, dass die Wohnung größer ist. Dann hat jedes Kind ein eigenes Zimmer.
Außerdem ist die Miete oft billiger und es gibt mehr Grün.
Ein Nachteil ist, dass der Weg zur Arbeit länger ist.
Die Kinder müssen vielleicht die Schule wechseln und neue Freunde finden.
Ich würde trotzdem umziehen, weil mehr Platz für eine Familie sehr wichtig ist.
Two advantages, two disadvantages, one clear decision with a reason. Weil sends the verb to the end: weil ... wichtig ist.

If you don't understand the examiner
This happens to everyone. Asking politely is normal communication and much better than silence or a guessed answer to a different question.
- Entschuldigung, können Sie das bitte wiederholen? (Sorry, could you please repeat that?)
- Können Sie bitte etwas langsamer sprechen? (Could you please speak a bit more slowly?)
- Was bedeutet das Wort ...? (What does the word ... mean?)
- Meinen Sie, dass ...? (Do you mean that ...?)
- Einen Moment, bitte. Ich überlege kurz. (One moment, please. Let me think.)
How to practise
- Record yourself on your phone and listen. Are your sentences complete? Is the verb in the right place?
- Practise all three parts with a timer: 3 minutes, 6 minutes, 6 minutes.
- Prepare words for common photo topics: family, shopping, work, free time, transport, health.
- Practise one advantage/disadvantage situation every day.
The app has speaking tasks for all three parts, photo examples, model answers and English and Turkish help, plus topics that candidates have reported from Berlin exams. More words are on the vocabulary page.
