What level is the Sprachtest zur Einbürgerung?

Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

How long is the test?

65 minutes: 30 minutes reading, 20 minutes writing and about 15 minutes speaking.

Is there a listening part?

No, there is no separate listening section. You need to understand the examiner in the speaking part, though.

How many points are there, and how many do I need?

There are 30 points: 9 for reading, 6 for writing and 15 for speaking. You need at least 18 points in total, and at least 7.5 of 15 in the written part, and at least 7.5 of 15 in the oral part.

Can I fail one part and still pass?

No. If you have less than 7.5 points in the written part or in the oral part, you do not pass, even if your total is 18 or more.

Is the Sprachtest the same as the Einbürgerungstest?

No. The Einbürgerungstest is a knowledge test about Germany. The Sprachtest is a German language test. See our comparison page.

How long should I prepare?

It depends on your German. If you are already close to B1, a few weeks of regular, focused practice with the test format can be enough. If not, plan more time. Doing the official model test under time limits shows you where you stand.

Where do I register and how much does it cost?

At a Berlin VHS: online, by written form or in person. Fees are set by the VHS; for example, VHS Pankow lists €75. Check your VHS.

Is this website affiliated with the VHS or the State of Berlin?

No. Sprachtest Einbürgerung is an independent study tool. It is not run by or connected to the Berlin Volkshochschulen or any authority.

Does the app give official scores or certificates?

No. Results in the app are for practice only. Only the official test at a VHS gives a certificate.

Can the app guarantee that I pass?

No. Nobody can guarantee that. The app helps you practise the format and the typical topics.

Which languages does the site support?

English, German and Turkish. Practice tasks have explanations in English and Turkish.

Do I need an account?

No. You can start practising right away in your browser.

Where is my progress stored?

Only in your browser, on your device. We do not store it on a server. You can export a backup file and import it again, for example on another device.

Does the app work on my phone?

Yes. It works in the browser on phones, tablets and computers.

Does the app prepare me for the Einbürgerungstest knowledge test?

No. It prepares you only for the Berlin language test.

Einbürgerungstest vs. Sprachtest

The names sound almost the same, but they are two different tests. For naturalization you usually need both: proof of B1 German and proof of knowledge about life in Germany.
